    Thick Relationality: Microtonality and the Technique of Intonation in 21st Century String Performance

    This practice research explores the relationship between intonation and microtonality, and questions how these approaches to understanding musical pitch can relate to one another in 21st century string performance. Drawing on elements of historical and contemporary string technique, current debates on Artistic Practice as Research, an evolving discourse surrounding embodiment, and my own creative practices of playing and teaching, this research develops a relational epistemology of musical pitch via various ways of modelling, practising, representing, and ultimately knowing pitch. The outcomes of this research are presented in seven Instances of Practice, a phrase chosen in place of the more conventional ‘case study’ in keeping with this project’s core principle that embodied practice is epistemic, being ‘structured by and productive of knowledge’ (Spatz, 2015: 26). The accompanying portfolio, comprising six audio recordings and an original teaching resource, reflects discovery-led accounts of specific instances where embodied knowledge has been put to use in the practice of experimental music for solo violin and small string ensemble

    Comparison of ecosystem processes in a woodland and prairie pond with different hydroperiods

    Shallow lakes and ponds constitute a significant number of water bodies worldwide. Many are heterotrophic, indicating that they are likely net contributors to global carbon cycling. Climate change is likely to have important impacts on these waterbodies. In this study, we examined two small Minnesota ponds; a permanent woodland pond and a temporary prairie pond. The woodland pond had lower levels of phosphorus and phytoplankton than the prairie pond. Using the open water oxygen method, we found the prairie pond typically had a higher level of gross primary production (GPP) and respiration (R) than the woodland pond, although the differences between the ponds varied with season. Despite the differences in GPP and R between the ponds the net ecosystem production was similar with both being heterotrophic. Since abundant small ponds may play an important role in carbon cycling and are likely to undergo changes in temperature and hydroperiod associated with climate change, understanding pond metabolism is critical in predicting impacts and designing management schemes to mitigate changes

    Quantitative assessments of how trainees affect patient care have been limited, especially in the emergency department (ED). A US study by Pitts et al found that supervised resident visits were associated with greater resource use, including longer length of stay (LOS) in the ED. As EDs host more core clerkship courses, less experienced students have become involved in bedside care.     The TreaT-Assay: A Novel Urine-Derived Donor Kidney Cell-Based Assay for Prediction of Kidney Transplantation Outcome

    Donor-reactive immunity plays a major role in rejection after kidney transplantation, but analysis of donor-reactive T-cells is not applied routinely. However, it has been shown that this could help to identify patients at risk of acute rejection. A major obstacle is the limited quantity or quality of the required allogenic stimulator cells, including a limited availability of donor-splenocytes or an insufficient HLA-matching with HLA-bank cells. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel assay, termed the TreaT (Transplant reactive T-cells)-assay. We cultivated renal tubular epithelial cells from the urine of kidney transplant patients and used them as stimulators for donor-reactive T-cells, which we analyzed by flow cytometry. We could demonstrate that using the TreaT-assay the quantification and characterization of alloreactive T-cells is superior to other stimulators. In a pilot study, the number of pre-transplant alloreactive T-cells negatively correlated with the post-transplant eGFR. Frequencies of pre-transplant CD161+ alloreactive CD4+ T-cells and granzyme B producing alloreactive CD8+ T-cells were substantially higher in patients with early acute rejection compared to patients without complications. In conclusion, we established a novel assay for the assessment of donor-reactive memory T-cells based on kidney cells with the potential to predict early acute rejection and post-transplant eGFR

    Colorectal Cancer Prevention: Perspectives of Key Players from Social Networks in a Low-Income Rural US Region

    Social networks influence health behavior and health status. Within social networks, “key players” often influence those around them, particularly in traditionally underserved areas like the Appalachian region in the USA. From a total sample of 787 Appalachian residents, we identified and interviewed 10 key players in complex networks, asking them what comprises a key player, their role in their network and community, and ideas to overcome and increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Key players emphasized their communication skills, resourcefulness, and special occupational and educational status in the community. Barriers to CRC screening included negative perceptions of the colonoscopy screening procedure, discomfort with the medical system, and misinformed perspectives on screening. Ideas to improve screening focused on increasing awareness of women\u27s susceptibility to CRC, providing information on different screening tests, improving access, and the key role of health-care providers and key players themselves. We provide recommendations to leverage these vital community resources
